My Makes • March 2025

My studio is full of STARS! Large star medallion quilts to be specific. See this month’s blog to read about my next modern pattern collection. But I’m pleased to report that I also managed to finish all the hand quilting on a special baby quilt I made for a dear friend. And we made very Irish blocks-of-the-month in our local modern quilt guild in honor of St. Patty’s Day. I’m Irish by marriage so I played along!

Hand quilted baby quilt for sweet sadie

To elevate the design elements and make them pop over the background color, I chose the deeper pink Perle Cotton for the white shapes, white for the darkest elements, and a matching thread color for the background fabric. While the cross hatch pattern was a lot of hand work (!), I loved how easy it was to mark up the lines with my Hera marker using the corners of the squares as guides. Strangely, I always remember the TV shows I watched while hand quilting. This one was Severance (Apple TV+), Adolescence (Netflix), and … no judgment … Love is Blind Season 8 (Netflix). Sadie should definitely not be allowed to watch any of these for quite some time.

I can’t wait to finally deliver this to Sadie and see her crawl around on top!

Western North Carolina Modern Quilt Guild Block-of-the-month

On honor of St. Patrick’s Day, our monthly BOM was the Celtic Twist. I had never made this block before so it was fun try something new. I will say that my brain hurt a little making sure all the right colors and components were in the right place (and yes, I had to pull out my trusty seam ripper) but isn’t the final optical illusion so cool?! Kim, our Chair of the Activities Committee, also sets a challenge for the monthly block. Of course, this one was to use only green fabric from the good ‘ole stash. Here’s mine! And here is the free pattern we used if you want to try your own Celtic Twist.

Thanks for being here. Happy Making! — Melinda
