Black Balsam, one of four patterns in the Land of the Sky collection, is inspired by pinwheels and windmills, reminiscent of the feed sack quilts of the 1800’s. This is a beginner-friendly pattern created using half-square triangles, squares, and an easy-to-make method for split quarter-square triangles that make up the pinwheels. Black Balsam Knob, near Milepost 420 on the Blue Ridge Parkway, is a popular spot due to its easy trail hike to a grassy bald summit with spectacular views and the promise of a stunning show of stars.
Skill Level: Confident Beginner
